# What Is PHP and How Does It Work With Sober Living Near New Jersey?

Phoenix Recovery Project · Recovery & Sobriety · May 2026 · 7 min read

Philadelphia recovery homes accessible from South Jersey via the Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman bridges.

For many people the path from active addiction to lasting recovery runs through two critical stops — a partial hospitalization program that provides intensive clinical treatment and a certified sober living home that provides the stable structured environment needed to apply what was learned in treatment to real daily life.

For families and individuals in South Jersey including Camden County Cherry Hill Voorhees Haddonfield Burlington County and Gloucester County finding quality PHP programming and certified sober living close to home is one of the biggest challenges in the recovery process. Philadelphia — just across the Delaware River — offers both. Here is what you need to know.

## What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program — commonly called PHP — is the highest level of outpatient addiction treatment available. PHP typically involves five to six days per week of intensive structured programming lasting six or more hours per day.

PHP provides the clinical intensity of inpatient treatment without requiring the patient to sleep at the facility. This makes it the ideal step for people who:

- Have completed medical detox and are medically stable but need intensive clinical support before stepping down to standard outpatient
- Are transitioning from inpatient or residential treatment and need continued intensive programming
- Have a stable and safe living environment — or are entering a certified sober living home — that supports their treatment
- Do not require 24-hour medical supervision but need significantly more than once or twice weekly outpatient therapy

PHP typically includes individual therapy group counseling psychiatric evaluation and medication management case management and evidence based addiction treatment modalities including cognitive behavioral therapy dialectical behavior therapy and trauma informed care.

## What Is the Difference Between PHP and IOP?

PHP and IOP — intensive outpatient program — are both levels of outpatient addiction treatment but they differ significantly in intensity and appropriate clinical indication.

PHP — Partial Hospitalization

- — 5 to 6 days per week
- — 6 or more hours per day
- — Highest level of outpatient care
- — Appropriate immediately after detox or inpatient
- — Full clinical team involvement daily
- — Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
- — Best paired with certified sober living for housing stability

IOP — Intensive Outpatient

- — 3 to 4 days per week
- — 3 hours per day minimum
- — Step down from PHP
- — Appropriate for patients with stable recovery foundation
- — Evening scheduling often available for working patients
- — Same evidence based therapies as PHP with greater schedule flexibility
- — Also best paired with sober living or stable home environment

Most clinical pathways for opioid and alcohol addiction move from detox to PHP to IOP to standard outpatient over the course of months to a year or more. Each step down in clinical intensity should correspond to an increase in stability independence and recovery foundation.

## Why PHP and Sober Living Work Better Together

The most common reason people relapse during or after PHP is housing instability. When a person leaves a six hour day of intensive clinical treatment and returns to an environment where substances are present where there is no structure and where there is no peer accountability — the gains made in treatment erode rapidly.

Certified sober living paired with PHP solves this problem directly.

Here is how the combination works:

1. Morning

Resident wakes up in a structured sober living home. House meeting. Breakfast. Accountability check with housemates and staff.

2. Daytime

Resident attends PHP programming — individual therapy group counseling psychiatric appointment or medication management as scheduled.

3. Evening

Resident returns to sober living home. Dinner with housemates. House meeting. 12-step meeting in the community. Study or employment preparation.

4. Night

Structured curfew. Accountability check. Rest in a safe sober environment surrounded by peers in recovery.

Every single day of PHP is reinforced by the structure and accountability of the sober living environment. Every evening of sober living is informed by the clinical work done during the day. The two reinforce each other in ways that neither can accomplish alone.

Research consistently shows that people who pair PHP or IOP with certified sober living achieve significantly better long term sobriety outcomes than those who attend outpatient treatment without stable sober housing.

> "Treatment teaches you how to get sober. Sober living teaches you how to stay sober. You need both."

## PHP and Sober Living Options for South Jersey Residents

South Jersey residents seeking PHP programming and certified sober living have historically faced a resource gap. New Jersey has addiction treatment resources but quality certified sober living options within commutable distance of PHP programming have been limited particularly in Camden County and the communities immediately across the Delaware River from Philadelphia.
