He came home with medals, memories, and a substance use disorder that nearly cost him everything — his marriage, his career, and his life. His story is not unique among veterans. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans are significantly more likely to struggle with substance use disorder than the general population. PTSD, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, and the invisible weight of what was seen and done in service create conditions where alcohol and drugs become the easiest way to cope — until they stop working and start destroying everything.
